DIY Kits vs. Professional Installation for Metal Buildings

By Steel Building Advisor Team4 min read

One of the great appeals of tubular steel buildings is that they bolt and screw together like a giant erector set. Because of this, many handy homeowners wonder: “Should I buy a DIY kit and install it myself to save money, or should I pay for professional installation?”

While building it yourself can be a rewarding weekend project, it isn’t for everyone. Here is what you need to consider before grabbing your tool belt.

1. The DIY Route: Risks and Rewards

Many manufacturers offer a “drop-off” discount if you choose to install the building yourself. They will deliver the bundled materials to your site and leave you with the instructions.

The Pros:

  • Cost Savings: You save on the labor costs built into the retail price.
  • Scheduling: You can build it on your own timeline without waiting for an available crew.

The Cons:

  • The Heavy Lifting: Steel is heavy. You will need at least one or two strong friends to help you stand the walls and lift the heavy roof trusses into place.
  • Equipment Costs: While standard tools (drills, tape measures, levels) are required, larger buildings might require you to rent a scissor lift or scaffolding to safely install the roof panels, which eats into your savings.
  • Voided Warranties: If you fail to square the building properly, cut a panel incorrectly, or fail to install the right number of anchors, the manufacturer will likely void your structural and leak warranties.

2. Professional Installation: Peace of Mind

For the vast majority of buyers, the price quoted by the dealer already includes delivery and installation on your level site.

The Pros:

  • Speed and Expertise: Professional crews build these exact structures every single day. What might take you an entire weekend, a pro crew can often finish in 6 hours. They know exactly how to square the frame perfectly.
  • Zero Liability: If a worker gets hurt, or if a steel panel gets scratched during installation, the crew’s insurance and the manufacturer cover it. If you scratch a panel during a DIY build, you have to live with it or buy a replacement.
  • Warranty Protection: Having the building erected by certified installers ensures your 20-year rust-through and structural warranties remain fully intact.

The Verdict

If you are building a small, standard 12x20 carport and have construction experience, a DIY kit is a fun project that can save you a few hundred dollars.

However, for fully enclosed garages, wide-span workshops, or commercial buildings, the minimal savings of a DIY kit are rarely worth the extreme physical labor, equipment rental costs, and risk of voiding your warranty.

Letting the professionals handle the heavy lifting is almost always the smartest choice.
